Raus aus Chemnitz?

Comics

Part of Chemnitz 2025
Role Project lead and comic artist

A comic series about origin, courage – and what it means to leave, miss, or return to a place.

Since 2025, Chemnitz is one of the European Capitals of Culture. I initiated the project out of a desire to explore how place, memory and identity shape each other – and how leaving a city can mean something entirely different to each person. Raus aus Chemnitz? tells the stories of women who left the city behind – and reflects on transformation, distance, memory, and identity. The stories emerge from an East German context – shaped by personal transitions and broader societal change.

Based on interviews, each comic explores a unique perspective: on growing up, breaking away, and staying connected.

The comics are created in collaboration with artists Tessa Astre (Oulu), Ulrike Jänichen (Halle), Magdalena Kaszuba (Hamburg), and myself. The stories will be published online from August 2025.

The project is part of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 and supported by the German Federal Cultural Foundation, the Finnish Institute in Germany, and the Free State of Saxony.
