Role
Illustration & story development of the children’s booklet Flügge – The Little Owl and Fear; creation of wall drawings
Technique
Ink, acrylic, and colored pencil on emulsion paint (wall drawings); digital illustration and layout (24-page booklet)

In 2025 I was commissioned by the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz to create an illustrated project for the exhibition ANGST, part of the European Capital of Culture year in Chemnitz. Working closely with the Education and Mediation team led by Christiane Meister, and with co-curator Diana Kopka, I developed Flügge – The Little Owl and Fear.
Flügge is a 24-page illustrated children’s booklet that tells the coming-of-age story of a young owl. After experiencing a profound loss, the owl confronts her fear and gradually learns to live with it. The narrative was inspired by Edvard Munch’s biography and by the works on display in the exhibition. It is a story that makes inner strength visible and translates existential themes into a contemporary, child-friendly visual language.

In addition to the booklet, I created large-scale wall drawings within the exhibition space. Executed in ink, acrylic, and colored pencil on emulsion paint, these site-specific works were designed especially for young audiences. Following an idea by co-curator Diana Kopka, they were placed at a height of 60 cm, directly at a child’s eye level. This approach allowed the illustrations to speak immediately to children while remaining fully integrated into the curatorial concept.
With Flügge I wanted to create more than a simple companion piece. It is both publication and installation – a work that bridges Munch’s biography, the curatorial themes of ANGST, and the personal experience of museum visitors. The project demonstrates how illustration, museum education, and exhibition design can intersect, inviting both children and adults to engage with Munch’s universe through a poetic, visual journey.
